A study-type label is a starting point for understanding design. It is not a complete methods section. A health writer should preserve the label, then locate the information needed for the specific claim being discussed.
ClinicalTrials.gov’s interventional definition involves prospective assignment to interventions under a protocol. In its observational definition, investigators do not assign the specific interventions being studied. Participants in observational research can still receive care.
Keep label and evidence together
Record the stated type, study identifier, source version and the description explaining the design. If the paper uses a different description, preserve both and investigate the relationship instead of changing one label to make the documents appear consistent.
A classification alone does not tell an editor every detail of allocation, comparison groups, follow-up or analysis. Create separate fields for the details the brief actually needs and mark unresolved items explicitly.
Avoid completing the methods from a familiar word
Do not expand an interventional label into a claim of random allocation without reading the allocation information. Likewise, an observational label does not describe the entire method used to select participants or address bias. Those questions belong with the relevant design and analysis records.
A useful extraction note distinguishes what the registry states, what the completed paper reports and what an editor has inferred. That separation helps a specialist check an interpretation without reconstructing an undocumented chain of assumptions.
Summarise within the material read
A brief can accurately name a design category while acknowledging that a full methodological appraisal has not been performed. It should not translate the category into a universal quality score or a verdict on a treatment.
No individual study was assessed here. The task is documentary: identify the record’s classification, preserve its version and locate the supporting methods before writing a more detailed account. The guide supplies no diagnosis, participation advice or conclusion about a research finding.
