A report with 2026 on its cover does not automatically contain observations collected in 2026. For a health-workforce briefing, keep the publication date, data-release vintage and actual observation year separate. That small discipline prevents a recent report from becoming an unsupported statement about today’s staffing.
WHO’s publication page dates National health workforce accounts: health workforce levels and trends 2026 to 22 June 2026. Its overview says the report draws on the 2025 NHWA data release and examines distribution, density and composition. The publication page establishes those details; it is not a substitute for reading a table’s notes.
Build a three-date record
Start a source note with the exact report title and ISBN 978-92-4-012292-5. Record 22 June 2026 as the publication date and the stated 2025 release separately. When extracting an actual figure, add the observation year attached to that row. Do not fill the third field from the first two.
If a table uses the most recent available observations, inspect whether the rows refer to different years. Preserve that information in a comparison worksheet. A reader should be able to tell whether a difference is a same-year comparison or a comparison of the latest observations available to the report.
Choose the claim before the chart
A question about workforce composition needs the occupational categories. A question about a change over time needs consistent periods and definitions. A question about present staffing at a hospital needs current facility information that a global report may not provide. Write down the question first so the report’s convenient number does not silently redefine it.
Make the citation useful
For a figure drawn from the full report, retain its table or page locator and the relevant source notes. If only the publication overview has been read, describe only what that overview establishes. This guide has not extracted national totals or evaluated the report’s full analysis.
The resulting brief can be timely while remaining precise about the age of its evidence. It should not invent current vacancies, hiring opportunities or a local service shortage from the year printed on a report cover.
Official source read 21 October 2026. The workflow and explicitly hypothetical example, where present, are editorial; no clinical or country-level finding is asserted.
